Seven events your activation funnel actually needs

A lean event model that keeps freemium activation analysis understandable and maintainable.

Workspace illustrating Seven events your activation funnel actually needs

More events do not automatically create more insight. A useful activation model captures meaningful progress, the context around it and the point where a user first receives the app's core value.

Capture entry and intent

Record account creation, acquisition context and the user's selected goal. Keep channel and campaign values consistent so later comparisons do not fragment across naming variations.

Measure setup as progress

Track one or two setup milestones that genuinely unlock value. Avoid firing an event for every tap; this produces noise and makes the funnel brittle when the interface changes.

Define the value event

Choose an event that demonstrates the promised outcome, not merely feature use. Add properties that describe the outcome's depth or quality without collecting unnecessary personal data.

Connect monetisation cleanly

Paywall viewed, plan selected, trial started and subscription activated should have stable identifiers and server-confirmed billing status where possible. This prevents retries and duplicate callbacks from inflating conversion.

Keep the question close to the metric.

A useful analysis should end in a decision your team can name, own and revisit.
